Artist Statement

August 30, 2009
I don't have much art experience, other than a few classes taken at school. Last year I took Drawing and Art Foundations. I really enjoyed my drawing class because I liked a portrait project we did. In Art Foundations, we did some work with clay, painting, and drawing. We also did some art criticism, which I actually enjoyed because I like to look at art and try to figure out the story behind the piece or the message the artist is trying to send to the audience. In middle school I took art class for a couple years. I think I have always enjoyed my art classes, but I don't consider myself to be an artist and I'm not very confident in my ability. I hope IB Art can change that. I have also studied art in my Spanish class. Last year we did a huge art unit in which we studied Spanish and Latin American artists like El Greco, Goya, Rivera, and Picasso. We then had to make an original piece in one of the artists' styles. I made a mosaic in the style of Gaudi. I really enjoyed learning about the artists and thought it was interesting to see how their lives affected their work. This past summer I travelled to Spain, where I was able to see Picasso's Guernica in person. I think this is my favorite piece of art that I know of. I was really amazed at the size of the piece. This is one of my favorite pieces because of its story and meaning. Picasso was trying to show the world something horrible that was happening to innocent people in Spain. While I was in Spain I also saw a lot of local art. I thought it was really neat how much art you could see just walking down the street. These experiences make up my current opinion of art.
